MK’s veterans join in with athletics gold rush

A LTHOUGH not quite at the same dizzy heights as Greg Rutherford’s Olympic achievement, Marshall Milton Keynes AC had a fantastic weekend with no less than 18 gold medals won at the Eastern Veteran’s Championships at Sandy.

The medals flooded in from the start with M55 John Browne and F35 Alana Slater scooping both the 100m and 200m titles in times of 12.6s, 26.5s, 14.1s and 28.8s respectively.

It was also gold in the F55 100m as Jan Lawson crossed the finish line in 16.0s, while M55 Ivars Licietis did the same in the 400m in 60.3s and 800m 2m 28.4s, with F55 Diane Baldwin winning her 800m in 2m 47.5s.

Two more golds came in the 1500m for M50 Malcolm Down 4m 46.5s and F35 Maria Calleia 6m 20.2s, while in the 3000m F55 Diane and F35 Maria collected their second golds recording 12m 01.3s and 12m 53.6s.

In the M35 category, Mark Roberson turned on the style with wins in the shot 9.73m, discus 29.01m, javelin 36.50m and hammer 46.03m.

M50 Mike Burling won the javelin by throwing 22.01m and M55 John Turner finally grabbed a victory in the discus 32.85m after taking two 2nd places in the 100m 13.8s and 200m 28.6s.

There were silver medals in the shot and javelin for M55 Jim Lawrence with 6.12m and 18.23m respectively, before wife Jeanette (F55) claimed silver in the hammer 22.88m.

The discus produced a silver for M50 Mike throwing 24.57m and a bronze for M55 Jim 18.41m. And Mike added a bronze to his tally in the hammer 28.99m, with F55 Jeanette taking bronze in the discus 13.71m.

At the popular Blisworth Friday Five mile Road Race, Matt Clarke finished a good 8th taking 28m 03s, with 50th placed Tanya Taylor coming home 3rd female in 33m 02s.

It was 68th for Kelvin Smith but 1st M60 34m 23s, with 99th for Jim Miller (M60) 37m 09s, 107th Kevin Church (M45) 37m 59s, 136th Jane Goodey (2nd F55) 40m 35s and 211th Milford Callow (M70) 52m 36s.
