Greg Rutherford enjoyed a winning start to his 2013 season when he jumped 7.89m to win a competition in Australia.
Finishing ahead of a strong field which included home favourite Mitchell Watt, Rutherford’s best jump of the day was good enough to claim the Perth Track Classic title on Saturday.
The competition was Rutherford’s first major outing since his Samsung Diamond League appearance in Birmingham last August – three weeks after he won Olympics gold with a leap of 8.31m in London.
He tweeted: “Hey everyone! Just finished with a win in Perth. 7.89 with some terrible run ups. But feels awesome to be back jumping.”
The 26-year-old is now warm weather training in Canberra.
