JACOB Fawcett wasn’t going to let a little thing like his age stand in his way as he finished 11th out of 40 in the Wavendon Club Championships last weekend.
The nine-year-old took on men old enough to be his dad in the tournament on Saturday, playing two rounds on the 18 hole course in driving rain. And he put in a top performance too, finishing just outside the top 10.
“We would have been happy finishing in the top half to be honest,” said Jacob’s dad Shaun. “There was only one other junior in the tournament, a 15-year-old, and he didn’t finish as high as Jacob, so we’re really proud of him.
“The conditions were really tough, there was torrential rain for the entire tournament.”
It is shaping up to be a busy week for Jacob too – putting his recent success behind him, he is already preparing for the HSBC Junior Open this weekend.
He has try-outs for the Buckinghamshire junior team coming up, and he’s also had his membership to the prestigious Woburn Golf Club approved, despite being two years younger than the age usually accepted.
