THE new British Basketball League season is still more than six weeks away, but MK Lions tip-off their preparations for the campaign in earnest tonight (Thursday).

Mike New’s men welcome New York side Stony Brook University to the Lions Arena in Winterhill for their first pre-season friendly, and will announce the club’s fifth new signing on court before the action.

Adrien Sturt became coach Mike New’s fourth summer recruit this week after Lions plucked the GB U23 international from basement boys Essex Pirates.

Born in Australia, Sturt’s roots are in the UK hence his qualification to play for the GB U23s. In the BBL with the Pirates, Sturt averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game, highly commendable for the lowest offensive team in the BBL.

Lions may still only have half a squad signed up for the season, but New said he was looking forward to the game, with Sturt joining Nuno Pedroso, Stefan Gill and Daniel Northern on the books.

“We won’t have everyone here but we need to start getting into the swing of things,” he said.

“Stefan will marshall our guys, but full pre-season has not started yet. However I know the Lions fans are missing their fix of basketball so this was a match up we were delighted to accept.”

Tip-off at the Lions Arena is at 7.30pm.
