Athletics club seal cross country title

Comerford stars in final race of season victory

In A fabulous climax to the Chiltern Cross Country League season, Milton Keynes AC regained their title at the final match in Wing.

Unlike most of the club's previous wins it was the men rather than the women who rose best to the challenge as the senior side won to clinch the team trophy – helped in a big way by race winner Tom Comerford.

The U20 women played their part in the victory as Melanie Wood headed the field to guide the young team – all under the age of 17 – to an overall triumph.

The margin of victory on the day saw the city club beat Bedford and County by 280 points overall.

Leading the triumphant men's team home in first position and winning the race was 22-year-old Comerford who ran exactly 32 minutes.

Seventh and heading up the junior men was Chad Lambert in 33m 29s. Next back was 13th Chris Hearn 34m 22s followed by 15th Sam Deathe 34m 46s; 27th Marcus Whelband 36m 08s and 30th Steve Herring 36m 24s.

Bringing the veterans' home was 32nd Andy Atkins 36m 30s; 34th Josh Lyman 36m 34s, while completing the junior team was 42nd Ross Threlfall 37m 16s followed by Robin Dowswell in 46th with 37m 59s.

It was a good day for the U13 boys led by seventh placed Toby Herdman-Smith 12m 03s; 14th Louis Clarke 12m 33s, 16th Charlton Kerr with 12m 35s and 27th Owen Seamark 13m 03s.

Individual women's winner on the day was Melanie Wood who came home in 18m 28s, followed up fifth placed Elle Roche 19m 59s; seventh Jo Livesey 20m 50s; 12th Rebecca Goyder-Smith 21m 31s.

Jasmine Finlay led the way for the U15 girls with 12m 36s ahead of 13th Jade Leggett with 13m 04s and 17th Emily Bousfield 13m 12s.

Sophia Cliffe was top performer for the U13 girls in 10m 15s, followed by 16th Lucy Hacking 11m 24s; 20th Amy Botham 11m 34s and Hannah Selvey in 25th with 11m 39s.

For the senior women it was again Lara Bromilow leading the way in 24m 12s with 17th Lauren Cripps 26m 24s not far behind, followed by 24th Sophie Wright 27m 20s and 26th Wendy Webber 27m 40s.
