Marshall Milton Keynes Athletic Club were unable to keep top spot at the Eastern Veteran’s Final in Bedford last weekend.

The women took second place, 13.5 points behind Fairlands Valley Spartans and 13 ahead of third placed Chelmsford.

The men had an even more torrid time though, finishing third behind hosts Bedford & County with Peterborough just five points behind in second.

However there was as usual some fine individual performances, especially form the “younger” members of the team. A good start in the 100m resulted in a win for Paul Canning (M40) 12.6s with 2nd for Chrispina Odunewu (F35) 14.6s and Di Baldwin (F55) 16.6s with 3rd by John Turner (M50) 13.5s.

It was similar in the 200m with Di improving to 1st taking 33.5s with 2nd places for Corinne Nurse (F35) 29.7s and Scott Herbert (M35) 23.7s and 3rd for Paul 25.7s and Ivars Licietis (M50) 26.8s.

It was not so good in the 400m with just a 2nd for Kim Lowden (F35) 71.8s and another 3rd for Ivars 60.1s, even the middle distances did little to help with the 800m producing a win for Di 2m 49.2swith 2nd places for Alana Slater (F35) 2m 50.1s, Dennis Edghill (M50) 2m 20.9s and Alasdair Gibson (M60) 2m 36.5s, while the 1500m yielded just 2nd for hard working Di 5m 51.8s.

The 3000m was a bit better with Di producing yet another win taking 12m 31.3s with 2nd by Kim 11m 10.1s, Jeremy Vick (M35) 9m 48.8s and John Skelton (M60) 10m 28.4s and 3rd for Ian Van Lokven (M50) 10m 30.1s.

In the 400m Hurdles Corrine Nurse (F35) was 1st in 78.7s with 2nd by Lesley Byrne (F45) 87.9s and Brian Slaughter (M50) 70.2s while unusually the 2000m Walk resulted in 2nd by Di 11m 54.3s and 3rd for Kerry Adams 14m 32.1s.

The most successful track event turned out to be the 400m, 200m, 200m, 400m Relay with wins for the F35 and M50 teams recording 3m 17.0s and 2m 56.7s with 2nd for the M40 squad finishing in 2m 48.7s.

The field events did go a little better although the High Jump resulted only in joint 2nd for Corrine clearing 1.30m and 3rd for Mark Roberson (M35) 1.35m. However the Long Jump was a great improvement with wins by Alana Slater (F35) 4.25m, Di 3.28m and Scott Herbert (M35) 5.51m with 2nd for Brian 4.41m and 3rd by Lesley Byrne (F45) 3.82m.

Another win came in the Triple Jump as Paul Canning (M40) cleared 10.03m with 2nd for Lesley 8.46m who then won the Shot with a putt of 7.92m with a win also for Mark 10.43m and 3rd for Bunt Scott (M60) 10.04m. A win in the Discus by Mark 30.72m was added to with 1st from Bunt throwing 37.72 and 3rd John Turner (M50) 33.56m. The hammer produced 1st by Sam Barnes (F35) 22.11m with 3rd for Di Presswell (F45) 21.42m who added another 3rd in the Javelin throwing 15.44m to conclude a tough day.

In a busy week on the international scene Chris Clarke ran 20.45s in good conditions to finish 6th in the 200m at the Diamond League Meeting in Brussels and then ran 20.44s for 3rd at the IAAF World Challenge Meeting in Rieti.
