Baseball boys buck the trend
THE MK Bucks were crowned British Baseball Federation National Single-A champions on Sunday following a 10-3 victory over the Guildford Mavericks at the National Baseball Championships in Hemel Hempstead.
The game was pretty tense throughout and the score remained tied at 3-3 going into the final inning.
But Bucks rallied together to score seven runs before killing any hopes Guildford had of mounting a last-gasp comeback.
The Bucks’ play-off star, Tom Lloyd, was the proud recipient of the Most Valuable Player award after he pitched an impressive eight innings and recorded 13 strikeouts - the most by any pitcher during the 14 games played over the championship weekend, even better than some Great Britain national team players could manage.
Jim Kerr also played a key role as he came off the substitutes’ bench to hit a game changing ninth inning triple. The game was also the last for Ross Barnes before being posted to Afghanistan.
With the baseball season winding down, the Bucks are now looking ahead to 2011 and the defence of their title.
