Chloe leads ladies team home
Milton Keynes Athletic Club round-up
The ladies of Milton Keynes AC had a much improved day in round two of the UK Women's League as they finished in a highly respectable fourth place to lift them to fifth place in the standings.
The performance of the day was that of Chloe Whalley's superb 100m hurdles effort which wiped two tenths of a second off the long standing club record, while Sophie Gibbens was also in the mood for change as she lowered her personal 800m best time.
The 100m hurdles not only resulted in that new record, but also a double victory with Chloe taking the A string in 14.12s and Hannah Douglas winning the B string race in 14.48s before Hannah also won her preferred 400m hurdles in 59.06s.
There was another double success in the hammer when Andrea Jenkins threw 48.88m and Sadie Watts made 47.70m. Andrea also won the B discus with 41.12m while in the A event Emma Beales was second with 42.82m.
Having finished third in the 100m in a time of 12.02s Joey Duck took second spot in the 200m by taking 24.63s and it was another second in the 800m for Gibbens as she lowered her PB time to 2m 13.63s.
Following her great hurdles show, Whalley added a second place in the B long jump clearing by 5.15m. And to conclude a good day there were third places for Tanya Taylor 10m 44.74s in the B 3000m, Gibbens 7m 29.10s in the 2000m steeplechase, Beales 11.31m in the shot, and the 4x100m relay squad 49.32s.
>> In Cardiff at the British Masters Championships 'evergreen' Jack Kee (M70) won two gold medals by setting a Championship best performance in the hammer with 46.52m and throwing the weight 16.28m.
There was also a silver medal in the pole vault as Brian Slaughter (M50) cleared 3.00m and there was a string of near misses with fourth places going to Ivars Licietis (M50) with 56.55s in the 400m and 2m 16.3 for the 800m.
There was also fourth places for Jan Harcastle (F50) in the 80m hurdles in a time of 17.44s and long jump 3.81m, and Di Farmer (F50) who clocked 5m 51.5 in the 1500m. There were two sixth places and a seventh for Mike Burling (M50) in the B 400m 65.66s, Weight 10.70m and hammer 27.35m respectively.
>> On the international scene Chris Clarke and Greg Rutherford were in action at La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland where British number one Rutherford was victorious in the long jump by clearing 7.97m and Clarke was sixth in the 400m taking 46.50s.
The club junior javelin record was broken by Sam Taylor-Outridge while competing in "Javelin Carnival" event at Pihtipudas, Finland, as he launched the spear out to 64.36m.
At the same meeting fellow junior Jackson Curtis (M20) finished second with 45.14m while brother Redford (M15) set a PB of 44.48m and M23 Michael Cox threw 56.70m.
>> At the Dacorum and Tring Open Pentathlon meeting in Hemel Hempstead, Elizabeth Read set two new PBs with 14.6s in the 80m hurdles and 1.43m for the high jump. She also made 5.45m in the shot, 4.33m in the long jump and completed the 800m in 2m 57s for a total of 2071 points.
>> As it stands only Rutherford (long jump) and Craig Pickering (4x100) will be heading to the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona at the end of July. Javelin ace Mervyn Luckwell still has a chance of going to Spain, but will need to reach the qualifying standard in the next two weeks.
