City lose out in Bucks Cup final

Rivals Wycombe edge home with narrow victory

Milton Keynes lost out to High Wycombe for the second successive season in the Bucks Cup final, losing out 29-19 in this season's finale.

City, who claimed third place in the Southern Counties North this season took on a Wycombe side who finished in mid-table in the South West Two East.

Facing the highest ranked club in Bucks, City knew they would have their work cut out to lift the trophy but they made the trip to Wycombe with a positive attitude.

And they made a cracking start, surging forward, the pack storming up the left and after some great inter-passing Dan Pearson slipped around the blind side to score.

Andy White missed with the conversion but minutes later made amends by slotting over a penalty.

The game was really buzzing and Wycombe worked their way back into the match, the hosts taking advantage of a lack of concentration at a quick tap penalty and scoring a converted try.

Milton Keynes fought their way back upfield and White added two penalties after offside decisions.

Wycombe replied with a penalty of their own and then broke through with a converted try to lead 17-14.

The second half went a full 20 minutes without further score but then Wycombe created an overlap to score a try. But City were not finished.

The three-quarters moved upfield, centre Phil Powell kicked over the heads of the defence and as the Wycombe defence hesitated, Phil Powell collected the ball to score.

The game was still there to be won with Wycombe only holding a five-point advantage.

But with just five minutes left, Wycombe kicked upfield. The ball crossed the line and the bounce of the ball evaded a City player as he dived in to touch it safe, Wycombe pouncing to score the decisive try.

There was no time for City to respond to this killer blow, Wycombe lifting the cup for a second successive year.

As the visitors went up to receive their losers' medals, there was a generous round of applause from the hosts who knew they had been in a hard game.
