City driver Glenn out to double up

Champion wants another Carrera Cup win

Despite having gone into the championship having never driven around two of the circuits, Glenn McMenamin is perfectly placed to retain his Porsche Carrera Cup title.

The Milton Keynes driver is sitting second in the Pro-Am2 class at the halfway stage - and believes he is driving better this season than he was when he won the title in 2009.

With five rounds - consisting of 10 races - of the championship left, Glenn is looking forward to strong performances at Snetterton and home circuit Silverstone next month as he goes full speed into the second half of the season.

"I think I'm actually better off this year than this time 12 months ago," he said. "This season has been pretty good so far. There are a lot more people in the series so it means the championship battle is a lot tighter than it was.

"We have been to two tracks I'd never driven before - Thruxton and Croft - and I didn't get on the podium for either of the races. It was a real wake-up call and meant that we had to pull our fingers out and dig deep to get back into the title race."

Having won three class races, Glenn sits just behind rookie Steve Parish in the battle for the championship, which he believes will go down to the wire.

He added: "It's all set up to be a great battle. There are still a few drivers out there who could win it. I think it will go down to the final race.

"We follow the Touring Car series, and they still draw huge crowds of fans. Although they are the main event, our cars are actually faster than theirs and the crowds still wait to watch the Carrera Cup. People don't get the chance to drive a Porsche - let alone throw one around a race track so it's a great sight."

Despite huge, and costly, renovations to Silverstone in a bid to secure both MotoGP and Formula One races at the venue, Glenn believes his home circuit is not as exciting as many of the others in the series.

"The national track is not too challenging, so there is not a lot of difference between the drivers there. At the pre-season track day I was fastest in the class so that will be the bench mark.

"It is frustrating sometimes when a lot of the other drivers in the class will follow me during their practise laps to learn where I'm going well. But unless you do something dramatically different at Silverstone it will be a difficult event."

The second half of the campaign begins in August and Glenn believes the real race for the title will start at the next round at Snetterton in Norfolk.

"We get to the real racing at this point," he said. "We can start allowing ourselves to think about winning the title again, but we've really got to concentrate and finish every race.

"The pressure is certainly on for the next rounds. We're hoping to have it all wrapped up and not to have to compete at Knockhill in Scotland. But if it comes down to it, we may have to travel up there."

The next round of the Carrera Cup is on August 7-8 at Snetterton, and is screened live on ITV4.
