City victory keeps their hopes alive

Southern Counties North league

Milton Keynes kept their hopes of promotion alive with a 28-17 win over visitors Grove at Greenleys on Saturday.

City were first on the scoreboard with a penalty from Andy White, the visitors showing a real lack of discipline throughout.

The hosts were awarded another penalty, but this time the kick sailed wide.

From the restart Grove were deemed off-side but continued to argue with the referee and conceded another penalty.

City this time kicked for touch, won the line-out with Stuart Tomkinson barging his way over for a try.

As tempers flared again a Grove player was sin-binned but it was then City's turn to be penalised, Grove converting the penalty.

City added to their score with half time fast approaching, Dan Pearson breaking away from well inside his own half to score in the corner.

With just a couple of minutes to go to half time Tomkinson was yellow carded, Grove converting the penalty to trail 13-6.

Grove further narrowed the gap with a penalty but City then scored another try courtesy of Phil Powell.

The visitors continued to show their spirit and reduced the gap to one point with a penalty and a try.

City pulled themselves together and finished off the afternoon with two tries, one from number eight Stuart Tomkinson and the second from Garth Davis, who followed up his own kick.

Saturday sees City away to Aylesbury in what is their penultimate league fixture of the season and they will go into the game still one point behind second placed Marlow and four points behind leaders Buckingham.
