100 year old football club Woburn Athletic at ‘real risk of closure’

THIS is the summer of discontent for the few remaining players of Woburn Athletic, as their small club faces an uncertain future.

After a tough campaign last season, which saw Athletic relegated from the Bedfordshire County League Premier Division, the first team manager, club secretary and treasurer all decided to quit, leaving the club perilously close to folding entirely.

But Nick Busby, a long-term servant of Athletic, isn’t willing to let the club, with nearly 100 years of history, go down without a fight.

“There is too much history at stake to let the club just disappear like that,” said Busby. “I’m just fighting to keep the club running, but we need help to keep everything going. There’s a real risk of closure.

“We can’t just let part of Woburn’s history fade away like this. So I would like to appeal for a new team manager, treasurer and secretary – anyone who wants to help out.

“We would also like to strengthen the current playing squad. We need a goalkeeper, but all outfield players will be welcome. We will start training at Crawley Road, Woburn, on Monday July 16,”
