Football round-up: Wanderers still holding up the rest

editorial image

BLETCHLEY Town put a run of poor results behind them on Saturday when they beat local rivals MK Wanderers by the odd goal in five.

Their 3-2 Manor Fields win sees Town move further away from Wanderers at the wrong end of the table as the Kents Hill side look increasingly cut adrift at the bottom of the pile after picking up just two wins in their 14 South Midlands League Division Two games.

Old Bradwell United lost 4-2 to Hale Leys and are now just five points better off than Wanderers who still have two games in hand.

At the top of the table there was more bad luck for leaders Mursley United who lost 2-1 at home to The 61 FC. Despite that they remain two points clear of title rivals Aston Clinton and Totternhoe, but both sides still have plenty of games in hand.

Stony Stratford remain in danger near the foot of SML Division One after going down 3-2 at home to London Lions.

New Bradwell St Peter suffered a 1-0 defeat at Harpenden, while Cranfield United’s match at Welwyn Garden City was postponed due to a frozen pitch, as was Olney’s Town trip to Rothwell Town in United Counties League Division One.

Only four games survived the freezing conditions in the Milton Keynes Sunday League. The only fixture in the Premier Division to go ahead saw CS Athletic beat Loughton Athletic 2-0.

Stoke Hammond moved to within one point of the Division One leaders Olney with a 7-2 win against Punjab United.

FC MMIX and Stantonbury Social B also closed the gap at the top with 2-0 and 3-1 wins against New City Saints and MK United respectively. There are now only two points separating the top five teams in the division.

The majority of games in the North Bucks & District League fell victim to the cold weather, but there were still some interesting results.

MK Wanderers were pleased to get their game at Deanshanger played as their 6-1 away win saw them climb to the top of the Premier Division while title rivals Potterspury and Southcott Village had the weekend off.

Other games played in the top flight brought a 3-3 draw between Loughton Manor and Thornborough Athletic and a 6-1 humbling for Wolverton Town at the hands of Stewkley.

Great Horwood strengthened their hold on the Intermediate Division by beating AFC Santander 4-1, although Stoke Hammond Wanderers appear to be finding their best form at the right time after thrashing Steeple Claydon 7-2.

Elsewhere there was a 3-2 victory for Celtic MK against Bow Brickhill, 7-3 win for City Colts over Wicken Sports and a 3-1 success for Denbigh Hall over Olney.

In Division One, Bow Brickhill Res fell 5-3 to Southcott Village Res, Woughton went down 5-1 to Grendon Rangers and Potterspury Res enjoyed a 2-0 win over Charlton & District.

With City Colts Res seeing their game against Wolverton Town Res in Division Two called off, Great Linford Res were able to go level on points with the table toppers by seeing off the University of Buckingham 4-2.
