Round-up: Top sides too good for Stony
STONY Stratford Town couldn’t have had a much tougher return to action after the recent whiteout as they took on two of the South Midlands League Division One’s top teams in the space of three days.
Stony have enjoyed a good season under the stewardship of James Cain, but title challenging Hoddesdon Town got the better of them in a 5-2 win at Ostlers Lane on Saturday. And despite another good effort, Stony lost 2-1 at Harpenden Town on Tuesday night.
The two Hertfordshire teams are only kept off top spot by Cockfosters, who beat Cranfield United 2-0.
In Division Two, Old Bradwell United went down 2-1 away to Mursley United and Wolverton Town lost 4-2 at home to Hale Leys United.
Stony have the chance to get back to winning ways at home to Welwyn Garden City on Saturday, while New Bradwell St Peter return to action at home to Chesham and Cranfield visit Buckingham Athletic. Wolverton head to Kent Athletic and Old Bradwell host on Aston Clinton.
Newport Pagnell Town were beaten 4-1 at home by title chasing Spalding United on their return to UCL Premier Division business.
And there were highs and lows away from home for Olney Town who earned a 3-1 win at Wellingborough Whitworth 3-1 on Saturday, before losing 2-0 at Northampton Spencer on Tuesday.
Newport head to Cogenhoe United this Saturday and Olney have a third away game in a week at Buckingham Town.
