Round-up: Unlucky Stony narrowly beaten

STONY Stratford Town gave South Midlands League Division One title chasers Cockfosters a good run for their money on Saturday, but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 defeat.

Epitomising their improvement this season, Stony opened the scoring after only three minutes when Shaun Carr’s effort was too hot for the Cockfosters keeper to handle.

But the north London outfit arrived at Ostlers Lane having only lost three of their 20 league games this season, and fought back to secure all three points with two second half goals, moving them to within two points of leaders Harpenden, but with three games in hand.

James Cain’s men gave Cockfosters a few scares in the final 10 minutes, but they couldn’t net a deserved equaliser and have to make do with a still very creditable 12th place at the halfway point of the season.

New Bradwell St Peter’s run without a league win now stands at 22 games this season, although they did at least pick up their second point with a 2-2 draw against Winslow United at the Recreation Ground.

Stony travel to Buckingham Athletic on Saturday while bottom of the table Peters head to leaders Harpenden.

Wolverton Town were on the end of a 7-1 beating by Division Two leaders Aston Clinton and Old Bradwell United beat Hale Leys 3-2 to cement their mid-table place.

In the United Counties League Premier Division, Newport Pagnell Town were held to a 0-0 draw by Deeping Rangers, while in Division One, Olney Town lost 3-0 at Oadby.

The Swans travel to Harborough Town on Saturday while Olney visit Rushden & Higham United.
