Striker Lynch voted player of the season

Swans man caps superb goal scoring season

Goal machine Darren Lynch was voted the Players' Player of the Year by his Newport Pagnell Town team-mates after helping to steer his side to their best ever season.

The veteran striker bagged an outstanding 27 goals in 36 league matches as the Swans challenged for the United Counties Premier League title before eventually finishing in third place.

He also claimed several key goals in cup competitions as his side enjoyed an extended run in the FA Cup and made the final of the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy.

And boss Terry Shrieves was full of praise for his front man, but insisted that several other members of his first team squad would have been just as deserving of the honour.

"Darren was superb for the club this season but five or six other players would have also deserved it, including Richard Armstrong and John Thorpe," he said.

"But I guess that just shows what a good year it's been for the club in general."

The Manager's Player of the Year prize went to midfielder Rob Tapp – a player Shrieves described as his side's 'unsung hero' of the season.

"He deserves credit for all the hard work he puts in that not everyone notices," said the Swans boss.

"Rob really does the ugly stuff in the middle of the park well and makes us tick."

The Swans' Young Player of the Year went to 18-year-old Alex Phillips who joined the club on work experience after being released by Blue Square Premier outfit Rushden and Diamonds.

"He's proved his quality by joining a winning side and still doing well and scoring some goals," said Shrieves.

"That isn't always easy but he's been excellent and we're hoping to keep hold of him."
