Super Swans make history by reaching last 32 of Vase

NEWPORT Pagnell Town enjoyed one of the best days in the club’s recent history on Saturday when they booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Vase.

The Swans beat Godmanchester Rovers 3-1 at Willen Road to earn a last 32 tie at home to Ashington AFC on January 21 – the furthest Newport have ever been in the competition.

And they did it the hard way after coming from behind as they suffered an early setback when Massimo Lagioia put through his own net in just the third minute.

However, Dean Buss levelled for the Swans after 26 minutes, and the hosts’ pressure told two minutes after the break when Dom Lawless fired them in front for the first time.

And Newport’s place in the fourth round was sealed by Matt Broomes who made it 3-1 to the hosts just after the hour mark, setting Darren Lynch’s men up with a difficult, but certainly winnable, home tie against Ashington of the Northern League Division One.

Their third round win means the Swans have now made sure of at least £3,600 in prize money, and chairman Geoff Cardno says that will go a long way to helping the club on and off the field.

“We’re doing some work on the clubhouse which will now be done sooner rather than later,” he said.

“This sort of prize money is of paramount importance to a club like ours.

“But of course the main thing is the prestige of doing so well in the competition. This is the furthest we have been in it. Saturday was a huge game for us and we want the local people to be out in force to support us again in the next round.”
