Goal-scorer Carl Baker admits he’d happily sit on the bench for the rest of the season if it meant Dons won their final two games.

The winger came off the bench on Tuesday night with half an hour remaining against Doncaster Rovers and the score at 0-0, but after teeing up Dean Bowditch, Baker netted twice himself to wrap up the 3-0 win to keep the pressure on Preston in the fight for automatic promotion.

I’d happily sit on the bench for the rest of the season if we win 5-0 every week.

Baker hasn’t started for Dons since March 21 having missed out on the action with a calf strain, but has made two substitute appearances in his comeback.

With Dons still just a point behind Preston in second place though, Baker admits he’d be willing to remain on the bench for the remainder of the season if it meant Dons kept up their winning form.

“I’d happily sit on the bench for the rest of the season if we win 5-0 every week, especially at this stage,” he said. “I was asked the other day whether I’d prefer to be 5-0 up at half time, or 0-0 and come on to score the winner with 10 minutes to go, and I said 100 per cent 5-0!

“It’s all about getting the points on board now. It’s a squad game.”

It wasn’t just fans glued to their phones throughout Tuesday’s game to keep up to date with Preston’s progress against Notts County.

Baker risked a fine from manager Karl Robinson when he admitted he checked the score at half time, but said his Dons team-mates know they’ve got to keep winning to maintain the pressure.

He said: “I only knew because I was on the bench. I had a cheeky little look on my phone at half time! The gaffer says just to keep concentrating on ourselves.

“We just need to keep winning and knocking on the door. We’re just hoping and praying they slip up and we can take advantage.

“The lads have to keep digging deep. There’s two games to go, and all the pressure is on Preston. If they win their last two games, fair play to them but we’ll go into the play-offs full of confidence. But hopefully, they’ll slip up and we’ll take advantage of it.

“We’re absolutely flying, we’re unbeatable at the moment. We’re so fast and teams can’t live with that. Teams won’t fancy coming up against us. What will be will be. We believe we can beat anyone on our day.”
