Robbie Neilson has begun talks with some players whose deals are set to expire this summer.
David Martin, Dean Lewington, Ben Reeves, Dean Bowditch, Nicky Maynard and Daniel Powell are among the biggest names to be out-of-contract at the end of the season, with a host of fringe and young players too.
And with some key players up for renewal, Neilson says talks are already underway with a few to see where their future lies.
"It's really important, if not more than bringing in players," said Neilson. "If I've got quality here, then we have to try and keep it. We'll do as much as we can to try and do that.
"We're working away in the background trying to get things sorted with a few of them because we have to build a nucleus of a team, so when we get to the summer window, we don't have to bring in 10 players, more like four or five.
"So we're constantly looking to build and add. It's hard to bring in 12, 14 players and expecting them to bond straight away."
With plans to build a new training ground at Tickford Fields near Newport Pagnell given initial approval by the MK Council cabinet on Tuesday night, Neilson believes the players are being shown the level of ambition the club has.
"The training ground getting passed through a few days ago shows the direction we're taking," he added. "We want to take the club to the next level, and we want people here who want to be a part of that.
"We don't just want players here who get us into the Championship, but players who can help us push up in the Championship as well."
