Goalkeeper Cody Cropper may play all of MK Dons’ cup games in goal this season ahead of regular stopper David Martin.
The 23-year-old American has performed admirably in his two outings so far, against Leyton Orient and Cardiff City in Dons’ Capital One cup campaign.
But like Ian McLoughlin before him, Cropper finds a stubborn, and very much in-form David Martin ahead of him in the pecking order.
But manager Karl Robinson hopes Cropper’s performances in the cup competitions, which could also include FA Cup games, will not only spur Martin on to continue his great form, but also give him food for thought.
“If I want to keep Dave in the form he’s in, he needs to be pushed on a daily basis, and know the guy on the bench is pushing him.
Cody might even play in the FA Cup games. In years gone by, we haven’t done that. But Dave has had a few niggles and we wanted to take the load off him.
“Ian played the support act for many years and pushed, now Cody is pushing him again too. It’s crucially important.”
