The first of Dons’ two pre-season friendlies on Saturday ended in a comfortable victory for Karl Robinson’s men, beating Newport Pagnell Town 4-0 at Willen Road.
Teenage midfielder Dele Alli was undoubtedly the star of the show as he showed signs of what Dons fans have to look forward to in the coming years.
And Alli played a key role in winning a penalty after just five minutes. His trickery saw him easily skip by his man, sliding in Daniel Powell who was hacked down. Alli confidently scored the spot kick to put Dons ahead.
Jon Otsemobor had a powerful strike brilliantly saved, but the stopper could do nothing when Powell picked up on Darren Potter’s lofted ball forward, rounding the keeper to put Dons 2-0 after 14 minutes.
Newport Pagnell weren’t without chances though as powerful striker Darren Dykes fired a free kick just over the top and put a header over too.
Argentinian trialist Santiago Aloi looked impressive, albeit against lower league opposition, pulling the midfield strings alongside Darren Potter.
Alli was seeing a lot of the ball, particularly in the second half as the outlet on the left flank. But he could have doubled his tally on the day after he brilliantly brought he ball down and fired in, but the shot was well saved at the near post.
Two minutes later though, Dean Lewington curled in a free kick from the edge of the box to make it 3-0.
The first teamers then made way for an injection of youth, and they proceeded to run Newport Pagnell ragged in the closing stages with their crisp, fast passing.
Kabongo Tshimanga slotted home Dons’ fourth late in the game after a well-worked move found him space at the far post.
