KARL Robinson has revealed the squad that will travel to St Neots Town for Dons’ first pre-season game on Saturday.
And it will be a strong team that takes to the field at the Hunts Post Community Stadium, with new signings Dean Bowditch and Darren Potter among those who will play at least 45 minutes each. Midfielder Shaun Williams will also make his long-awaited Dons debut.
Southern League Division One Midlands outfit St Neots have a reputation for splashing the cash in the non-League and secured promotion from the United Counties League Premier Division last season. They earned a record 105 points on their way to the league title, edging out Newport Pagnell Town in the process.
Their squad also includes a couple of former Premier League players. Stefan Moore made 22 appearances for Aston Villa and was snapped up by St Neots from Halesowen Town for a five-figure sum in October last year, and went on to score 30 league goals – seven less than Newport’s Darren Lynch.
Former Coventry City midfielder Gavin Strachan also plays for the Cambridgeshire club.
The Dons team to travel to St Neots is: David Martin, Dean Lewington, Tom Flanagan, Harry Milton, Gary MacKenzie, Adam Chicksen, George Baldock, Darren Potter, Stephen Gleeson, Shaun Williams, Daniel Powell, Lewis Guy, Joel Gyasi, Luke Chadwick, Dean Bowditch, Sam Baldock and Jabo Ibehre.
After Saturday’s game Dons will leave for the Republic of Ireland for a 10-day training camp, and will take on League of Ireland Premier Division side Drogheda United – currently in the middle of their season – at Hunky Dorys Park on Tuesday, July 19. They currently sit second from bottom of the table and their home game with Dons comes four days after they entertain table toppers Shamrock Rovers.
