This season could prove to be Dons’ best chance of securing promotion to the Championship, says manager Karl Robinson.
Results couldn’t have gone much better for the men from MK1 on Saturday, who didn’t play due to international call-ups.
The overall picture leaves Dons sixth in League 1, but wins in their three games in hand would see them go top on goal difference, ahead of previous runaway leaders, and big spenders, Bristol City.
But even though the numbers add up at the moment, Robinson isn’t getting too carried away, but hopes belief in the camp can carry them to where they want to be in May.
He said: “There’s never a best chance, it’s about the chance you make. We believe we can compete.
“I think the results went quite well for us. I was over the moon that Swindon won!
“You couldn’t have hand-picked the results much better. It gives us an opportunity now to win our games in hand and be really competitive.
“But to be in the top six with three games in hand is not bad. We’re in a good place. But there’s a long way to go, and no-one is getting too carried away.”
And although Bristol City are suddenly back in touch with the chasing pack, Robinson hasn’t ruled out another spending spree at Ashton Gate to help them back into the Championship.
He said: “We cannot compete with Bristol City (financially), but nothing in this game will surprise me. We know the strength in depth they’ve got, and in January they’ll probably go and spend money again while we won’t.”
