DONS fans will now travel to Cheltenham Town for their Capital One Cup first round tie on Saturday, August 11, instead of the following midweek after the home side decided to postpone their pre-season friendly match with Gloucester City.

Despite it being common knowledge that the Football League would allow clubs to move their cup dates back a few days in light of the regular campaign kicking off a week later than normal due to the London Olympics, the Robins decided to announce a friendly game against their near neighbours from the Conference North division on the Saturday.

However, after discussions between the two clubs, the tie – like some others – has been moved back and Cheltenham’s game against Gloucester will now be re-scheduled.

A statement on the Cheltenham website said: “Although the tie will be played at the same time as the Olympic football gold medal match, officials from both clubs believe that playing the match on a Saturday will attract a larger crowd than a Tuesday night.”
