David McGoldrick put Ipswich ahead after 16 minutes before he gave away a penalty on the stroke of half time, tripping Samir Carruthers. Alex Revell converted the spot kick to draw level at the break.

Brett Pitman headed Ipswich back into the lead midway though the second half before Revell netted his second of the afternoon to point the game towards a draw.

But Varney popped up in the last minute to head past Charlie Burns to send Dons to 23rd in the table with a game to go.
