STRUGGLE - Dons defender Dean Lewington

MK Dons suffered a 6-0 defeat in the Capital One Cup third round at stadium:mk on Wednesday night.

Our man at the game, Charles Crook, rates the Dons players’ performance on a difficult evening.

MK Dons player ratings v Southampton:

David Martin – 6

Little chance with most of the goals, but unable to keep out a record goal concession.

Lee Hodson – 5

Did his best to cope with the various green-shirted attacks down his flank. Probably the bet of the Dons’ defence on a rough night

Kyle McFadzean – 5

Struggled with the lively front Saints quartet. Gave away the penalty and inadvertently assisted Shane Long’s first goal.

Antony Kay – 5

Turned for the opener and culpable for Mane’s first goal. Struggled to recover from the early errors.

Dean Lewington – 5

Unable to get much joy going forward and struggled with the menacing Mane on the left-hand side

Sergio Aguza – 6

Offered a reasonable display in midfield, despite the Dons having a tough examination

Diego Poyet – 6

Quietly solid in a deeper role than late, but not able to do much going forward. Reasonable showing under the watchful eyes of his father Gus.

Carl Baker – 6

Looked the likeliest of any Dons player to make something happen, and also offered some firmness in defence, but largely peripheral.

Cristian Benavente – 5

Substituted after 36 minutes. Lack of match fitness perhaps showing, but failed to get into game

Daniel Powell – 5

Enjoyed a few decent runs against Cedric Soares, but largely unable to get much joy on a frustrating evening

Simon Church – 5

Ran around a lot seeking an opening, but anonymous and unable to get the lucky break to build on his debut Dons strike at the weekend

Substitutes:

Rob Hall – 5

Bought on the first half, and bought a lively enough presence, but unable to get much joy against the Saints’ resolute defensive lines

Ben Reeves – 6

Made his first appearance against his former employers. Lively and combative, but appearance mainly to build up fitness

Nicky Maynard – 5

Made his debut a day after signing on a free transfer, but unable to make an impression
