The 36-year-old, who left LA Galaxy last week, is the highest profile candidate to have met with the club for preliminary talks about taking over from Karl Robinson, who left the club a month ago.

Speculation grew towards the end of last week, with some reporting Gerrard had been offered the job. However the Citizen understands a formal offer was never tabled for the former England international, and both agreed on Sunday to pursue other avenues.

Dons now enter a fifth week without a permanent manager in charge, but chairman Pete Winkelman still has time on his self-imposed time limit of 'the end of November' as he seeks out Robinson's replacement.

Former Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill was at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday to watch Dons draw 0-0 with Bristol Rovers and is now the bookmakers' clear favourite for the position.

Richie Barker will remain in caretaker charge of the squad for Tuesday night's game against Chesterfield at Stadium MK.
