Oldham win important for Dons defence

Karl Robinson couldn't fault his players in the 2-0 win over Oldham on Saturday.

Goals from Ben Reeves and Kieran Agard ensured all three points would head back down the M6 in the comfortable win at Boundary Park.

Vitally for Dons too was the clean sheet after the manager publicly singled out defender Paul Downing for his errors against Bury on Tuesday night."I thought we looked a good team today," said Robinson. "We only made one change from the team last week, but we looked better last week. Here, we looked defensively strong.

"I'm happy for the back four standing up and being counted. David Martin is a top keeper, and he does everything right. He's been well grounded, and knows what it takes to win. He's trying to lead yet another back four, but today was a great performance at the back"

But it was another frustrating afternoon for striker Nicky Maynard. Still to find the back of the net this season, Maynard was within inches of two or three chances but luck simply isn't on his side at the moment, according to his manager.

Robinson added: "The fans wouldn't feel his frustration with him if he wasn't working hard and playing well. He's working so hard. But the fans applauding him makes him want to wear this shirt.

"It's important we get goals all over the pitch. Nicky was just centimetres away though. He makes it difficult for the centre backs and brings in our attacking midfield three. He can't do more than what he's doing. But he made the keeper make one of the best saves of his life, then Ben Reeves scuffs one and somehow it goes in. It's just small fractions.
