Players won’t beat themselves up over Brentford defeat

CAPTAIN Dean Lewington won’t be getting too down about Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford at Griffin Park.

While looking at the result from afar, it is easy to point the finger at the defence for conceding three goals. However, the back four of Lewington, Jon Otsemobor, Shaun Williams and Antony Kay didn’t really do an awful lot wrong. Keeper David Martin too had a strong game between the posts, keeping out many of Brentford’s second half efforts.

Lewington thinks it was just one of those games where nothing they did went the way they had planned.

He said: “When there’s a last minute goal, we’re always disappointed and it’s a disappointing way to lose the game.

“They had ricochets and bobbles bounce in their favour, but they were first to the second ball and managed to get it in.

“But we don’t really need to be looking at the second ball at the moment – it’s the first attempts we should be cutting down on.”

Ismail’s early substitution came as a result of referee Lee Collins flashing his cards a little too easily in the opening 25 minutes, but Lewington didn’t think the game was especially dirty between the two, and felt that Ismail still had a lot to learn at this level.

He said: “It’s a tough place to come. We know they like to play a pressing game and get in our faces, but nothing over-stepped the line.

“I don’t think the game was dirty in any way. The referee booked Zeli for a bit of a nothing challenge really, and then he booked their full-back (Jake Bidwell) for an equally soft tackle.

“It is a learning curve for him, and maybe you can get away with these challenges in reserve games but not so much in league matches.

“It’s a very tough place to come, and from their previous results here, it’s never going to be easy.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s the first defeat in 10.

“We’re not going to beat ourselves up about it and we’re looking forward to the next game.”

And that comes next Saturday at home to basement boys Hartlepool.
