After Dons beat St James’s Gate 9-1 on Monday, Powell needed just 50 seconds to open the scoring against Drogs.

Dean Lewington and George Williams both came close with efforts from range, but Dons couldn’t add to their lead.

Drogheda were back in the game nine minutes before half-time though when skipper Lloyd Buckley tapped in from close range.

Dons boss Karl Robinson made just one change at the break, but was readying nine others just as Powell fired the tourists back into the lead, driving the ball low into the bottom corner.

The remainder of the team was substituted on the hour mark - with the exception of keeper Charlie Burns - but it didn’t affect Dons’ dominance on the game. Nicky Maynard, Samir Carruthers and Connor Furlong all came close to doubling Dons’ lead, but it was left up to Brandon Thomas-Asante, who also netted against St James’s Gate, to wrap it up six minutes from time.
