Right back Tavernier secures Dons loans move

NEWCASTLE United right-back James Tavernier has joined Milton Keynes Dons on loan for the remainder of the season.

Bradford-born Tavernier, a right-back by trade but equally comfortable at centre-back, makes the switch to MK1 just 48 hours after Magpies team mate Alan Smith.

Last night’s late recall by Tottenham Hotspur of Adam Smith, who has subsequently joined Leeds United, forced boss Karl Robinson to work around the clock and dip back into the loan window to fill the vacant right-back position.

The 20-year old has good experience of League 1 having enjoyed successful loan spells at Carlisle United and Sheffield Wednesday this season.

Originally on Leeds United’s books as a youngster, Tavernier switched to Tyneside and signed a two-year scholarship before inking his first professional contract in August 2009. He made his first team debut that season, featuring in the Carling Cup against Peterborough.

Last season the Magpies allowed Tavenier to get more minutes under his belt with a stint at nearby Gateshead. At the start of the 2011/12 campaign he made the switch to Carlisle United where he made 17 appearances – including the Cumbrian’s defeat to the Dons - during a three-month loan spell.

More recently, Tavernier was at Hillsborough with tonight’s opponents Sheffield Wednesday where he helped them to four clean sheets and was part of the side that beat West Ham in the FA Cup. He completed his loan at Wednesday earlier this month and is now free to play for the Dons for the remainder of the season.

Tavernier is not eligible for tonight’s game.
