MK DONS returned to pre-season training this morning (Tuesday) with one unexpected face in the crowd – that of former Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday striker Deon Burton.
The 35-year-old former Jamaica international has spent the last two years playing with a club called Gabala in Azerbaijan, and will train with the Dons squad for the next few days in the hope of earning a contract at stadium:mk.
Burton has enjoyed an impressive scoring record throughout his 350-game career, scoring an average of a goal every four games, while moving between clubs for a total of more than £1.3 million over the years. He has also played at the highest level for his country, representing Jamaica at the 1998 World Cup in France.
Meanwhile Alan Smith, fresh from agreeing a two-year deal with the club, was among the familiar faces as Karl Robinson’s men were put through their paces for the first time by fitness coach Damien Doyle at their Woughton-on-the-Green training ground, while right-back Jon Otsemobor met his new team-mates for the first time,
The first-team squad fly to the Republic of Ireland on Friday – where they play two games against Dublin sides on July 23 and 25 – before returning on July 26 ahead of their pre-season friendly against Kettering Town that Saturday.
