LIONS picked up their first pre-season win by sending American college outfit St Joseph’s packing 85-80.
The majority of Lions’ British Basketball League squad is yet to begin training for the new season which starts on October 1, so it was another opportunity for the club’s young guns to show off their talents after losing out to another US side, Stony Brook University, a week earlier.
Jordan Spencer and Chris Taiwah, both 17, impressed with Jordan’s two three pointers late in the game keying a strong Lions surge which saw them take the win.
For the visitors, Zach O’Brien was excellent netting 33 points and there was scoring from all over the floor, but it was Stefan Gill who stole the show with a game high 34 points before cramp slowed him down. He put pen to paper for another season in Milton Keynes this summer and looks set to hit the new BBL season in great scoring form.
Lions had trailed by six points come half time but the rally started by Spencer enabled the hosts to lead by the end of the third, and despite a late flurry from St Joseph’s, senior player Gill sealed the win for Lions.
Fans now have to wait until September 16 to see Lions in action again when Team USA visit the Lions Arena, with the club’s full first team squad getting their first outing on the court ahead of their season-opener against Leicester Riders.
