Gillian wins gold on club's European trip

Taekwondo Academy compete in Portugal

Following their recent success at the British Championships, a small team from Milton Keynes UTA Taekwondo Academy travelled to compete at an open international in Portugal.

The seven member team were to take part in the VI Open Internacional Cidade de Peniche 2009 and after arriving in Lisbon met representatives of the competition and received complementary transport to the city of Peniche.

In total there were over 500 competitors entering over the two days of events.

The poomsae competition got off to an excellent start for the visitors with Alison Ellerton and John Waite both gaining silver medals in their individual categories.

But coach Constantino Cesar, Sarah Hunt, Stuart Facey, Claire Waite and Gillian Waite were not so fortunate in their categories, just missing the medal places.

After a short break, Alison, Sarah and Cesar took part in the trio poomsae competition - unusual for UK contestants as the trio is of mixed gender - but the three performed extremely well in their first competition together.

The second day of competition saw the seven team members back in the dojang for the sparring event.

Only two of the team took part but everyone was there to support Gillian Waite who brought home the gold medal for her category and John Waite who achieved the silver medal in his.
