Ellis drives to Junior Open

There was no time for resting over the Easter holidays for JR Ellis as he stormed to victory at Llangollen Golf Club last weekend.

The 12-year-old golfer shot eight over par to take the win, which also saw him qualify for the Junior Wales Open later this year.

It wasn’t his first win this season either, having already picked up two local tournament wins.

Coach David Armor from Abbey Hill Golf Club said JR’s game is changing as he grows up, but he’s keeping up with it.

He said: “I tweak him every now and again particularly as his growth spurt continues.

“JR turned 12 last month and is already 5ft 9, so it is important to keep an eye on any changes, particularly to his swing whilst he is still growing. He did a great job in Wales and I am looking forward to the final.”

County squad member JR trains at Aspley Guise & Woburn sands to stay on top of his game.

He recently picked up a platinum award for scoring a 100 per cent in the National Golf Skills Challenge and has also been selected to be part of the (TIP) Talented Identification Programme.

With more than 30
tournaments already booked for the season and more coming in, the youngster knew exactly what he needed in order to help his golf out on the course.

He said: “I can drive the ball and I can putt the ball, so the only thing I need now is for Denbigh School to cut me some slack on the homework!”
