Heat end hopes of a hat-trick of wins

First BBL defeat for Lions

Marshall Milton Keynes Lions' hopes of starting the new BBL season with three straight wins ended in a narrow defeat to Guildford on Saturday.

Having beaten the Cheshire Jets and London Capital in their opening two games, Lions were looking for a hat-trick but lost a tough encounter after being penalised with the last five fouls of the match.

Facing the side who beat them in last year's play-off final, the hosts quickly built a 10-0 lead before Tommie Eddie got Lions going.

Eddie and Mike New put 10 points on the board before Yorick Williams added another two, although Lions still trailed 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Some stifling Lions defence restricted Heat's Keonta Howell and Mike Martin, but couldn't stop Guildford's Dean Williams from coming to the fore.

As Lions' Carl McNally and Robert Youngblood were both struggling with flu it was left to Terrell Brown to try and carry the visitors forward, with some powerful moves following from the evergreen New.

And Lions did eventually take the lead, only to suffer the blow of losing Williams with a back injury moments later.

Brown and New continued to take the attack to Heat and Simon Emmerson's quick three helped the visitors into a 42-38 half time lead.

But Lions made a slow start to the third session and only managed 12 points as the hosts regained control at 64-54.

An excellent Brown three started the final stanza and Eddie spun inside for two as the Lions edged back into it.

A Williams score then saw Lions just three adrift, but seconds later a foul was called on Brown after he stole possession, this sending Heat to the free-throw line where all Heat's remaining points would come.

But McNally hit two threes and a steal and score before Brown's three cut the deficit to 78-76 with just 30 seconds left.

But an unsportsmanlike foul was called on Williams with just three seconds left as Heat scored one from two and when a further foul was called, Heat scored both to seal the game.
