Historic win for city Pathfinders
American football side in first win on the road
The Milton Keynes Pathfinders have been celebrating their first win of the season after returning from a trip to the Gloucester Banshees with a well earned success and a maiden victory on the road.
MK knew this would be their best chance for success and so piled on the pressure right from the off. The first quarter ended 0-0 but left the Pathfinders in a good field position and further good running plays put them within yards of the endzone.
The visitors had the breakthrough when a fantastically worked play sold the Banshees defence across to the wrong side of the field and left Richard Price free in plenty of space to open the scoring.
Pathfinders followed up with the extra point and a further fieldgoal to end the half 0-10. The Banshees must have hoped their opponents would fade during the second half, but that wasn't the case. MK's defence came out after the break with some huge tackles as the offence continued to drive forward.
And they soon added to their lead when Californian quarterback Mike Keogh found his US Navy colleague Da'Angelo Laland with a pass to the endzone for another touchdown.
The fourth quarter was a tighter affair with the Banshees defence desperate not to conceded further - three times they were forced to punch an incoming pass out of a receiver's reach in the endzone.
MK would score again, but this time through their defence. Adam Moreland and Andy Larwill forced Banshees' quarterback to fumble the ball in the endzone, giving David Kockelburgh a simple task of falling onto the ball for the score.
Banshees did get a consolation touchdown in the closing stages to make the final score 8-24 - a slight disappointment to defensive coach Matt Hannigan-Train - but overall it was a performance to be proud of. The teams meet again in the British American Football League at Manor Fields on August 8 with MK looking to make it a win double.
