Scoreless Lightning suffer Cup semi heartbreak
LIGHTNING’S English Premier League Cup dreams were shattered on Thursday night as they once again failed to find a way past a resilient Sheffield Steeldogs – drawing 0-0 on the night and losing 1-0 on aggregate.
In the end a single Chris Sykes goal three minutes from the end of the first leg in Sheffield last Wednesday was enough to earn Steeldogs a final place against either Manchester Phoenix or Guildford Flames who meet next week.
Sheffield were certainly made to work hard for their aggregate victory though in what proved an extremely bad tempered affair at Planet Ice. Lightning outshot their visitors in two of the three periods, but after failing to score in 120 minutes over the two legs, it was the side from south Yorkshire that just about deserved to go through.
Incredibly Lightning have now failed to score in their last three meetings against Sheffield and have only beaten them once in five attempts this season. The two sides meet twice more in early March.
After such a bruising encounter, Lightning don’t have long to recover with two English Premier League games this weekend – Swindon Wildcats visit on Saturday night before the city side travel to Manchester on Sunday.
