Tigers tamed as Lightning grab vital points
five goal second period blitz ensured Lightning took important EPL points against a short benched Telford Tigers side.
When Toni Alasaarela netted the home side's first goal from Gary Clarke's assist after just 2mins 7secs many home fans were expecting an immediate goals feast.
But Telford got back in the game shortly after Milan Kostolny fired over the bar in a one on one with goalie Barry Hollyhead.
Karol Jets then supplied Kostolny to make amends with the equaliser at 7mins 18secs.
Telford's Dean Tonks was called for hooking at just after the nine minute mark and it took Lightning just seconds to take advantage with Clarke – who had hit the pipework a minute or so earlier- scoring at 9mins 29secs.
It was not until the 21 minute mark that Lightning extended their lead. This time Ales Parez went one on one with goalie Mike Brabon before scoring.
An interference penalty on Lightning's Daniel Croft only served to give the home side the chance to go further ahead as Nick Poole broke away to cross to Clarke to slot in at 26mins 37secs.
Clarke turned supplier for Alasaarela to bag his second on 31mins 36secs with a top shelf shot.
Less than a minute later, with Lightning on the powerplay, Kurt Irvine made it 6-1 at 32mins 24secs. That signalled the withdrawal of Brabon in favour of back-up goalie Daniel Heslop.
It was not long before he was picking the puck out of the net, again while Lightning were short-handed with Greg Randall serving a holding penalty. Poole was the provider for Mikko Skinnari to score on 35min 33secs to make it 7-1.
Lightning looked as though they might reach double figures as the third session got under way.
However Telford were able to reduce the deficit while Croft was in the sin bin for boarding – Claude Dumas firing in a rebounding Tom Parker shot at 46mins 11secs.
A fracas then saw Telford's Jake Armstrong and the home team's Parez thrown out of the game. Parez clashed with goalie Heslop and Armstrong weighed in with the first punches.
Parez appeared to be trying to hold off Armstrong but both were given five plus game for resisting an official in addition to two plus two penalties for roughing.
Telford were unable to exert any pressure at all on Lightning when Ross Bowers was sent to the box for tripping.
But in the characteristic style of old Dumas went to the left of Hollyhead to score Telford's third goal at 56mins 57secs – all be it too late to alter the result.
