Unlucky Lightning bow out

LIGHTNING lost out in the battle to go to the Coventry play-off semi finals in dramatic fashion at Slough on Sunday night.

Taking a three goal lead to The Hangar following Saturday’s 7-4 first leg victory against Jets, Lightning saw their advantage evaporate in the first 32 minutes of the game before going behind on aggregate within the first 27 seconds of the start of the third period.

Then came a brilliant fightback which saw Matt Towalski score against his old club on 43mins 53secs and Adam Brittle regain the aggregate lead with a strike after 47mins 14secs.

Back came Slough though with a powerplay goal from Adam Calder after 53mins 22secs and one from Dan Davies with 4mins 43secs to go.

With 18 seconds of regulation time remaining, Blaz Emersic converted a penalty shot awarded for a Jets player illegally displacing the net to send the tie into overtime.

Lightning hearts were finally broken when a deflected shot from former MK defenceman Mindy Kieras sent Slough into the semi finals with 54 seconds of overtime left – winning a dramatic tie 11-10 on aggregate.

Slough had earlier established a four goal lead on the night with Joe Greener scoring after 18mins 11secs followed by goals from Calder (27mins 50secs), Darius Pliskauskas (32mins 11secs) and Davies (40mins 27secs).

It all looked so different on Saturday when Lightning won the opening leg in fine style at Planet Ice – the opening goal coming from Leigh Jamieson after 3mins 34secs before Jets tied things up with Doug Sheppard on the mark on 6mins 58secs.

But the hosts led 4-1 at the first break as Lightning ramped up the pressure with a goal from Adam Brittle and Adam Carr marking his return from injury with two superb strikes on 12mins 24secs and 17mins 29secs.

Michael Wales gave Lightning an unbelievable 5-1 lead after 25mins 50secs, but then Jets hit back with Pliskauskas registering at 26mins 22secs, Ryan Watt scoring on the powerplay on 27mins 29secs and Davies making it 5-4 at 30mins 23secs.

Jamieson with his second on 38mins 3secs made it 6-4 at the second break and Tuomas Tikkanen added the seventh after 54mins 20secs.
