Lightning preparing for title celebrations

One more point and city side are EPL champs

Almost there! Lightning are one point away from lifting the EPL crown after an exciting weekend in which their only title rivals, Slough Jets, dramatically threw away their chances of overhauling them.

Lightning brushed aside the challenge of Peterborough Phantoms on Saturday and then saw off Basingstoke Bison 3-1 on Sunday, while Slough suffered double defeats to Bison and Swindon Wildcats.

Those results meant Lightning finished the weekend eight points ahead of Jets with only four games to play.

A week ago it seemed Lightning's clash at Jets on Sunday would decide the title. Now MK can secure the championship in front of their own supporters by beating Wildcats on Saturday - or at least taking a point losing in overtime.

Even if they fail in that mission Jets would have to win all their remaining games and Lightning lose all theirs for the Berkshire team to pip them at the post - unlikely as the city side have only lost three times since December 6.

What is certain is that the atmosphere will be electric at Saturday's game with the party balloons at the ready.

on Saturday Peterborough's miserable season against Lightning continued with Andre Smulter scoring a super opener on 9mins 40secs.

A defensive lapse allowed Joe Miller to beat goalie Barry Hollyhead on 14mins 4secs but the hosts were back in front at 16mins 34secs thanks to Michael Wales.

Ross Bowers scored on the powerplay at 23mins 17secs before James Ferrara hit a second for Phantoms (28mins 57secs).

Adam Brittle made it 4-2 - Smulter the supplier on 30mins 46secs - and less than two minutes later Brittle was provider for Smulter's second.

By the second interval Lightning were 6-2 in front thanks to Brittle's second and the hosts rounded off the win when Matt Towalski set up Bowers at 52mins 13secs.

On Sunday goals from Wales, Smulter and Carr gave Lightning a 3-1 victory at Guildford.
