KARL Robinson wants to keep breaking records with MK Dons, but what he wants to be known for most is being the manager who finally took the club into the Championship.
Saturday’s big game at Queens Park Rangers will be historic for a number of reasons – not only will it be the first time Dons have competed in the FA Cup fourth round, but the players will have their biggest ever away support behind them, with the club likely to sell out their 3,100 allocation at Loftus Road.
But while the little club records keep on getting broken under his leadership, Robinson has set his sights on two even bigger targets as he aims to finally get Dons out of League 1 this season.
“It’s nice that we’re breaking a lot of records,” he said. “But the one I want to break most is the nine wins in a row, and I want to be the first manager to get this club into the Championship.
“We’re breaking a lot of small ones but it’s the big ones I want to accomplish. I’m still learning my trade – I’m nowhere near the type of manager I want to be.
“It’s nice to break records when you know you’re not at your best, but I’m sure Saturday will go a long way to me learning some valuable lessons.
“It’s an historic occasion. We want to make history again and make it into the fifth round. But we’re massive underdogs. They’re a Premier League team with one of the best managers in football trying to steer them in the right direction.”
But while everyone is looking forward to the action on the pitch in West London, conditions off it have been troublesome for Dons.
With the recent cold snap and the three inches of snow at their Woughton on the Green training ground, Dons haven’t been able to train on grass in over a week.
However, the Dons players will now enjoy a few days at West Ham United’s Chadwell Heath training ground to prepare for Saturday’s match – not that the snow hasn’t been a lot of fun, even if some of them enjoyed it more than others.
Robinson said: “A few players were moaning about playing in the snow, especially Izale McLeod when Alan Smith put a snowball down his back!
“But there was a lot of laughter and a lot fun. We’re a very tight group, there’s tremendous unity amongst us. It’ll put us in good stead for the rest of the season.
“We’re looking to travel away, stay over in a hotel down with a Premier League team, and train on some grass for a few days.
“We haven’t played on grass since Sheffield Wednesday (last Tuesday night).”
