While his Red Bull Racing team-mate Max Verstappen diced with championship leader Nico Rosberg at the front, Ricciardo came home fourth, a long way behind the leading trio and comfortably ahead of Sergio Perez in the Force India.

The Australian had dropped to fifth come the first round of pitstops, and found himself behind the Mexican for a stint, but made a move down the Hanger Straight and into Stowe to retake the position.

With no threat from behind, Ricciardo was able to take a trouble-free fourth place come the chequered flag.

“I think for the team and for the points it was really good,” he said. “Obviously we gained a bit on Ferrari which is nice, but for me it was lonely and a bit boring.

“When the pace in the front is what it is you can get a tenth here or there but not half a second per lap. I was ready for a battle and some action today, but unfortunately it wasn’t given to me. It is what it is now and hopefully Budapest works better.”

The next round, in two weeks time, is in Hungary where Ricciardo picked up his second win of his career back in 2014.
