Neither of the Red Bull Racing cars made it into the top 10 during the first free practice session at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
F1 returned to the track near Spielberg for the first time since 2003 on Friday, but neither Daniel Ricciardo nor Sebastian Vettel showed early signs of home track advantage.
While championship leader Nico Rosberg led the way for Mercedes, Ricciardo, who won last time out in Canada, set the 13th fastest time (1:12.570), while world champion Sebastian Vettel was 15th (1:12.988).
During the first 90 minute session, both drivers were lucky to escape unharmed from moments at Turn 9. Both drivers ran wide out of the final corner and on to the grass, with Vettel spinning twice perilously close to the wall, while Ricciardo managed to collect his wayward car as it skipped over a bump.
