Knockhill is a tight, undulating track and the huge crowd and live ITV 4 cameras were treated to unremitting action as the 120mph Juniors starred on the British Touring Car package.

Tregurtha was fourth out of 17 racers in qualifying but could only finish fifth in race one. That improved to fourth in the second race of the weekend as a controversial battle featured plenty of contact up and down the grid as well as penalties for two of the 16-year-old’s rivals for jumping the start.

Brilliant work by the Milton Keynes youngster’s team, HHC Motorsport, gave him a perfectly balanced car for race three on Sunday in front of a packed crowd at the circuit just north of Edinburgh. And Tregurtha took full advantage - helped by yet another jump start penalty to the leader Lewis Brown - he took the lead on lap 4 and calmly stretched the gap to second place to nearly three seconds by the chequered flag.

Tregurtha now leads the championship by 36 points with eight races left, split over the last three rounds at Rockingham, Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

Tregurtha said: “I must thank HHC and Enlighten for helping me get to this position. HHC are working so hard to give me a great car and I would not even be able to compete without Enlighten’s support.”
