Red Bull aren’t getting carried away as they aim for third titles
Vettel and Webber celebrate their success last time out in Korea
HE won’t be able to win the title this weekend, but Sebastian Vettel hopes he can get extend his advantage at the top of F1’s driver’s championship standings in India this weekend.
The Red Bull Racing driver completed a hat-trick of race victories in Korea two weeks ago to take over at the top of the pile from Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso - a remarkable comeback considering the German was more than 40 points adrift earlier in the season.
His back-to-back wins in Singapore, Japan and Korea have catapulted him into pole position to secure his third consecutive world title, as well as extending Red Bull’s advantage in the constructors’ championship to 77 points over Ferrari.
This weekend the F1 circus returns to India for the second Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit in New Delhi, the scene of another Vettel victory last season.
“I loved the track layout last year, but not just because I won the race,” said Vettel. “With an average speed of 235km/h, the course is the second quickest of the year after Monza.
“There is a lot of elevation change around the lap which adds to the fun, from as much as eight per cent downhill and up to 10 per cent uphill; it’s like a rollercoaster!
“It really has emerged as one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar for the drivers.”
Team-mate Mark Webber, fresh from a second place finish in Korea, will also be keen to rekindle some of his earlier form to climb the drivers’ standings.
The Australian is fifth in the championship, just a point behind McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, but 63 back of his Tilbrook team-mate Vettel.
But despite the unbeatable form the RB8 is showing lately, Webber said no one is thinking of more championship celebrations just yet.
He added: “No-one’s getting carried away but we are starting to find some form at the right point of the championship.”
