New expecting great things from Northern

AMERICAN Daniel Northern has become Lions’ second summer signing as they begin to build a squad capable of winning British Basketball League honours.

The giant 6ft 9in power forward moves to Milton Keynes from the Spanish League and joins Stefan Gill on the roster for the 2011/12 season after the Brit – one of last season’s leading lights – agreed to return for another spell at the Lions Arena.

Northern, 25, is a graduate of the Tennessee Tech university where he was a key figure at both ends of the court, averaging 13 points per game, plus 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Following his graduation in 2008, Northern got his first real taste of professional basketball playing in Spain before he enjoyed spells in Uruguay and Finland.

He then returned to Spain with Liga EBA side Mallorca from where he started to attract the attention of Lions coach Mike New who said he was excited by the prospect of Northern taking on the BBL.

“I think Daniel is tailor made to do well in this country,” said New. “He’s very athletic, he rebounds extremely well, he’s been the defensive anchor on every team he’s played with, and he can score without having to run plays for him.

“He’s every coach’s dream. He’s motivated by rebounding, which is rare these days, and he changes ends of the floor effortlessly. I’m looking for big things from him.”

Meanwhile Lions are continuing their pursuit of last season’s stars Demarius Bolds and Travis Nelson.
