Newport close the gap as New Bradwell draw

Morrant Four Counties League

With the vast majority of the weekend's action falling victim to the British summer it was left to New Bradwell and Newport Pagnell to take advantage and close the gap on Eaton Bray at the top of the table.

But as the league leaders' trip to Milton Keynes City was a wash out, second placed New Bradwell were being held to a draw by second bottom Olney Town, despite recording one of their finest performances of the season to date.

Zaheer Ahmed smashed an incredible 191 followed by 58 from Temoor Alam and 33 from Andrew Overton as the hosts went on to make 305-5.

Stewart Chapman then took 3-34 as a stunned Olney side went about trying to reduce a seemingly unattainable deficit.

However luck proved to be on their side as they held out for a share of the spoils, making 172-8 as Mike Brown put in a fine display to hit 84 of them.

Newport Pagnell were less charitable as they moved within touching distance of the top two as they beat North Crawley by 77 runs.

Town opened with 185-9 as Lewis Hefferon top scored with 56, closely followed by James Fletcher who added 54.

But North Crawley were unable to take advantage of a modest target, reaching just 108 all out, despite the best efforts of James Armstrong who put up a valiant 54 in Crawley's defence.

The only other game in Division One to survive the weather saw Winslow Town (190-4) record a 117 run victory over an out of sorts Aspley Guise (73 all out).

Division Four:

Old Bradwell 2nds picked up just their second win of the season when they saw off Milton Keynes 2nds by five wickets.

Martin Cross looked to have put Milton Keynes in control when he smashed 95 of their 203-6 total, but Jim Daniel bowled 4-29 to keep Bradwell hopes alive.

And his wickets was all the motivation Old Bradwell needed as they went on to record 204-5 thanks to contributions of 56 from Rob Felce, 54 from Vinod Tailor and 35 from the bat of Mike Downard.

Elsewhere in Division Four mid-table Willen picked up a useful win over second placed MK City 2nds who were all out for just 105.

And Willen made short work of reaching their target as they made 108 for the loss of just one wicket, Keith Marley the man to go after hitting 45, while Kim Thomas added 32 not out on route to a nine wicket victory.

Division Five:

Olney Town 2nds lost the battle at the foot of the Division Five table as they were downed by bottom side Wing.

Richard Barrass got hosts Olney off to an encouraging start as he hit 41 before Nigel Hurst put Wing in the driving seat as he bowled 3-16.

And the visitors made sure they picked up a valuable win as they hit 189-3 in reply with Steve Rose's 92 not out the highlight of their innings.

The only other game in Division Five saw Turvey 2nds (172-7) share the points with Tring Park 4ths (148-7).

Division Six South:

Cublington 3rd enjoyed a seven wicket victory over Caddington 2nds who opened with 129 all out as Les Rimmer bowled 3-16 and James Alexander 3-39. And in their reply Robin Harrhy's 41 not out guided Cublington to a winning total of 131-3.
