Oly Cats’ Championship South season concluded on Saturday with a narrow 39-36 defeat to Champions Brighton Seahawks at Cranfield University.
With the title-race having been decided a fortnight ago, Oly Cats head coach Bobby White took the opportunity to give youth a chance to shine, fielding a number of players from the under 18 squad for the majority of the game.
Ben Howard and Nathan Grant-Williams starred for White’s side, scoring seven and six goals respectively in what was a thrilling encounter against the East Sussex outfit.
Brighton, who fought off competition from Oly Cats and Thames to secure the title, showed why they are champions as they took advantage of their inexperienced opponents.
Despite a clinical attacking display from the away side, Oly Cats weren’t in the mood to surrender and kept within touching distance throughout.
In the end the gap was too much to make up for the home team, though, with Brighton going on to secure a three-goal victory.
Oly Cats head coach Bobby White said: “It was a close game, and the young boys performed very well in attack. Defensively, we showed our inexperience and Brighton were able to take advantage of a few lapses in concentration.”
