IN a play-off to decide this year’s Bletchley Indoor Bowls Club U16 Singles Champion, Harry Axelson beat Nathan Nimmo in a thrilling two-set match.
Nathan, 15, took the first set comfortably 9-4 after just six of the scheduled seven ends. But undeterred, Harry, 14, settled himself steadily in the second set, finding himself 3-1 up after four ends before Nathan fought back to take three shots in the fifth, putting Harry under pressure with one shot down.
But then Harry managed to pick up two shots on the sixth to put himself one up going into the final end, where he added another to finish the set 6-4 in his favour.
With the score at one set all, a one-end decider was played where Harry produced another fine draw bowl to claim the title.
As the Singles Champion, Harry now goes forward into the regional knockout rounds of the English Indoor Bowls U16 Champion of Champions Tournament which are due to be completed in early February.
Then, if successful, there is the prospect of competing in further rounds and maybe go all the way to reach the National Championship Finals held at Nottingham Indoor Bowls Club on March 30, where the eventual national finalists will play on the televised rink and the successful winner becomes National U16 Champion of Champions.
